Case Study

A brief clinical case study appears below. The particular case is one of several that rotate randomly on this and some other pages.

Constipation

Jillian, aged fifteen, was having problems with constipation and painful periods. She was able to use her bowels only every three days. Her diet was poor and included a lot of white bread and little in the way of fruit and vegetables.

Her treatment for the first month included:

  • vitamin B complex in addition to a general multivitamin and mineral supplement,
  • herbs to work on the liver and sluggish bowel:
    • barberry,
    • boldo,
    • cascara sagrada,
    • licorice,
    • rhubarb root,
    • ginger,
    • burdock and
    • dandelion root.
  • herbs for painful periods:
    • black haw bark,
    • cramp bark, and
    • pasque flower.
  • a change in her diet to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables and to decrease the reliance on white bread.

On her return visit Jillian reported using her bowels every one or two days and there had been no problems with the periods. The treatment was continued with the addition of a walking program to improve her fitness and general body tone. After another month her bowel was working every day and freedom from painful periods continued. After another two months of treatment the herbal aspects were tapered off.

Providing Jillian maintains her improved diet, supplements and exercise program there is no reason why she should have a relapse in her condition.
