Case Study

A brief clinical case study appears below. The particular case is one of several that rotate randomly on this and some other pages.

Asthma

Brian was a fairly typical asthma case. He first visited at the age of seven after he had been diagnosed as having asthma. Both his father and uncle suffered from asthma. Brian's asthma usually develop following a cold. Brian was a 'picky eater' who also had the problems of tiredness and bed wetting.

His first month of treatment included:

  • a mineral combination of iron phosphate, potassium chloride, calcium phosphate,
  • vitamin C and vitamin B complex, as well as a general multivitamin and mineral supplement,
  • liver and lymphatic herbal tonic:
    • burdock,
    • coltsfoot,
    • violet leaves,
    • dandelion root and leaves,
    • fringe tree,
    • centaury and
    • wahoo.
  • the avoidance of pollutants and especially cigarette smoke.
  • eating a healthy diet that contains plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and to avoid sugar and to eat only small amounts of animal fats.

After the first month of treatment there were no attacks of asthma and Brian's eating improved. The treatment was continued for two more months and during this time these was some slight wheezing and a partial relapse during the third month. Treatment in these cases often follows a two steps forward one step back process. At this stage the herbs grindelia, lobelia and wild cherry were added to help reduce the spasms and to ease the breathing.

At this point it was also suggested that he commence regular exercise. Swimming classes for children seem to be particularly worthwhile, especially in a warm, indoor pool.

Children are particularly sensitive to chemicals in their food so it was suggested that Brian continue to stay on a diet that emphasised fresh vegetables, salads and fruit with a moderate selection of proteins.

Brian's improvement was steady and there was no full relapse just some slight wheezing occurring when the family were away. He is no longer dependent on the medical prescriptions.

Note: If you have asthma never discontinue your pharmaceutical drug treatment unless you are under the supervision of a health professional.
