Case Study
A brief clinical case study appears below. The particular case is one of several that rotate randomly on this and some other pages.
Eczema
Shirley, aged 42 years, had eczema on her hands. She had suffered with this for twenty years. There were deep cracks in her skin. Her diet was only fair as she ate a lot of white bread and sugary foods. She also drank several cups of coffee per day and had 25 cigarettes per day.
The first stage in her treatment was to establish a plan which would enable her to make some significant lifestyle changes. The lifestyle changes would be needed to make long term improvement in her health. Shirley would eventually need to:
- eliminate foods which she might be allergic to and eat more fresh fruit and vegetables.
- cut out the coffee and
- stop smoking cigarettes.
Shirley decided to make the dietary changes fist and then work on the coffee and cigarettes.
In addition to this change she was treated with the following:
- a general multivitamin and mineral supplement with additional:
- vitamin B,
- zinc,
- calcium,
- magnesium and
- evening primrose oil.
- herbs taken internally for the liver, colon and nervous system:
- burdock root,
- figwort,
- nettle, and
- red clover.
- the herb marigold made into a compress for the affected skin.
- the herb burdock made into an ointment.
Shirley eliminated wheat and eggs from her diet as she was intolerant of these and greatly improved her eating. On her second visit Shirley reported a great improvement in her condition. She did however have the beginnings of an infection in her skin. In smokers the circulation to the extremities is poor and the infection needed to be dealt with quickly.
Further cleansing herbs (dandelion root and leaf, violet leaves, centaury and wahoo) were added as was an increase in the dose of vitamin C. She was informed that if the infection did not clear in 48 hour she would need medical antibiotics. However, the infection cleared quickly and the improvement in her condition continued. She has begun a program to stop smoking and has reduced the amount of coffee that she drinks per day.
Unless Shirley is able to continue the lifestyle changes it is unlikely that she will stay free of the eczema.
