Case Study

A brief clinical case study appears below. The particular case is one of several that rotate randomly on this and some other pages.

Psoriasis

Lorraine, a 44 year old school principal, suffered from psoriasis that involved the skin on her elbows and scalp. Her diet was poor as she consumed a lot of fatty, fried foods and refined carbohydrates. She drank many cups of coffee and three glasses of wine per day. She ate little fruit and vegetables. Her position as a school principal was demanding and stressful.

Lorraine's treatment consisted of:

  • dietary advice to increase her intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and to limit the fried and fatty foods and carbohydrates. Also to avoid alcohol and to significantly reduce her caffeine intake.
  • advice was also given regarding reducing her stress levels including suggestions regarding a stress reduction program.
  • a general vitamin and mineral supplement with the addition of:
    • vitamin B (particularly folic acid),
    • vitamin C,
    • vitamin E,
    • zinc,
    • magnesium,
    • selenium,
    • calcium and
    • fish oil.
  • herbs that work on toxic situations and the liver:
    • burdock root,
    • cleavers,
    • dandelion,
    • figwort,
    • mountain grape,
    • red clover,
    • sarsparilla and
    • yellow dock.
  • herbs to help deal with stress:
    • chamomile,
    • lavender,
    • kava,

    • lemon balm,
    • marjoram and
    • valerian.

At the four month point in her treatment Lorraine's skin had cleared. She was making improvements in her diet but he coffee consumption was still high though somewhat reduced. She had joined relaxation classes. She was pleased with her progress but the pressures of her school position were making it difficult to commit the time and effort that she felt was needed to further improve her health. The treatment as outlined above was continued.

For long term and lasting effect Lorraine would need to continue to be treated for some time and she would need to continue to make changes in her lifestyle.
