Case Study

A brief clinical case study appears below. The particular case is one of several that rotate randomly on this and some other pages.

Premenstrual Tension

Lynette, a 22 years old secretary, suffered from premenstrual tension. She also had bouts of constipation. Lynette had mood changes, becoming teary prior to her periods. She also had tender breasts, sugar cravings and her skin deteriorated, becoming pimply.

Lynette's treatment consisted of:

  • a general multivitamin and mineral supplement with additional:
    • vitamin B complex,
    • vitamin C,
    • evening primrose oil,
    • magnesium,
    • zinc and
    • chromium.
  • dietary advice to:
    • limit her intake of sugar, salt, red meat and alcohol.
    • eat small amounts regularly, with high quality protein snacks, such as nuts, seeds, peas and beans, as well as animal protein, such as eggs and fish. This is particularly needed to assist with the food cravings.
    • reduce the intake of fats, particularly animal fats, fried foods, and hydrogenated margarines.
    • to eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables (particularly leafy green vegetables).
    • starting a walking program.
    • herbs to help restore balance, cleanse and treat the various symptoms:
      • vitex berries,
      • dandelion root,
      • burdock root,
      • lavender flowers and
      • prickly ash bark
      • .

On the first follow up visit Lynette reported a great improvement, but that she still felt 'weepy' at times and at these times she had difficulty keeping to the diet and walking regimes. The treatment as outlined above was maintained with additional herbs to help alleviate the tension and mood swings - skullcap, chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower and oats.

On the next visit she reported feeling much better and the treatment was continued. At the six month point the herbs were gradually decreased but when some of the symptoms returned they were reintroduced - again with good results. Lynette continued to improve her diet and continued with her walking program. She has added some yoga to her exercise program. At the eight month point she was successfully tapered of the herbs.
