Willow (Black)
Salix nigra. Salicaceae. The bark is the part of the plant used.
The bark is collected in the spring when the new growth starts.
Functions of willow
Willow is a safe natural source of aspirin-like chemicals. It:
- can be used in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism where there is associated pain and inflammation.
- can be used as a wider treatment for any connective tissue inflammation.
- can also be used in fevers such as influenza.
Notes on willow
- Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin.
- It may be combined with black cohosh, celery seed, and bogbean in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
Dosages
Decoction: Put 1-2 teaspoons of bark into a cup of boiling water and simmer it gently for 10 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.
Tincture: take 2-4 ml of the tincture three times per day.
